What is The Recovery Time for Coronavirus Disease?

There are a host of questions out there related to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. One of the most common questions—besides “When will this end?”—is arguably “What is the recovery time?”

Coronavirus disease is a new condition that’s surrounded by plenty of unknowns. Researchers and scientists are still working to gain a better understanding of coronavirus and its recovery process. As of right now, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the average recovery time for mild coronavirus cases is about two weeks. For more severe cases, recovery may take closer to six weeks. Thankfully, the majority of cases are mild and can be addressed at home with plenty of rest and fluids.

Other Facts About Coronavirus Recovery

Coronavirus disease symptoms don’t always develop immediately after exposure to the virus. In fact, it may take two to 14 days after exposure for symptoms to become obvious, if they ever develop at all. In some cases, individuals with coronavirus never have noticeable symptoms.

If you test positive for coronavirus or are displaying possible symptoms, be sure to isolate yourself at home to avoid infecting others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), self-isolation should last until all of the following are true:

  • It has been at least seven days since your symptoms began OR you have received two negative COVID-19 tests 24 hours apart
  • You have been without a fever for three days (72 hours) and have not used a fever-reducing medicine
  • Your symptoms have noticeably improved

Call 911 immediately if you or someone around you is experiencing signs of severe coronavirus:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • Sudden confusion
  • Bluish face or lips
  • Loss of consciousness

When speaking with the 911 operator, be sure to inform them that the person in question has or may have COVID-19.

"We have a special needs daughter who needed her foot looked at. Thankful that Affinity accepted her Medicaid first of all. Staff was nice, did not have a long wait, doctor was knowledgeable and understanding with our daughter, which means a lot. She was able to get x-rays done on her foot and received the results before we left. A great place to go on short notice."
